The Extreme Importance Of Layering Your Child During Extreme Cold

Here’s hoping you’ve been keeping warm! As of late, a “polar vortex” has torn through the Greater Toronto Area. A polar vortex is described as a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. There is one currently forcing us all to endure temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celcius. Needless to say, it’s pretty cold out there!

Like most kids, your children may enjoy playing in the snow, during the winter. However, it’s extremely important to keep them bundled up when it’s extremely cold. Believe it or not, there’s a science to layering. For maximum warmth, be sure to layer your child with the following steps in mind.

Use moisture-wicking fabrics for the base layer.

Your base layer of clothing is the one that sits closest to the skin. It plays a vital role in managing moisture. To ensure that your child stays warm and dry, use such materials as merino wool or synthetic fabrics. They are known for “wicking” sweat away. Unlike cotton, which is known for retaining moisture, moisture-wicking clothes keep skin warm and dry to prevent those chilling sensations. Dress your child in such base layers as snug-fitting long-sleeve tops and leggings.

Provide insulation with your mid layer.

Layer number two should trap body heat. Worn over the base layer should be such garments as fleece jackets, wool sweaters or down vests. Naturally, the mid layer should be a little looser than the base underneath. This will enable air circulation which aids in insulation. Depending on just how cold it is outside, you might want to consider adding multiple mid layers for extra warmth.

Protect from the elements with the outer layer.

In addition to frigid temperatures, the winter brings us a lot of snow, sleet, rain and wind. With waterproof and windproof jackets and pants, your child can ward off the chilling effects of these elements. It’s important to select garments that are made of breathable materials to prevent overheating. As well, look for those that include such features as sealed seams and adjustable hoods. They work to enhance protection against harsh weather conditions.

Be sure to cover the extremities.

How often do you have to remind your child to “put on your hat and gloves!”? It’s a worthwhile demand considering that children lose a significant amount of heat through their heads, hands and feet. Make no mistake. It’s vital that they wear warm hats that cover their ears. Invest in a balaclava that’s made of merino wool to provide comprehensive coverage.

A pair of mittens is also a must. Select those of the insulated and waterproof variety. Mittens are preferable over gloves since they keep the fingers together. This will help your child retain more warmth. Warm socks are vital too. Those made of merino wool are great for keeping feet warm and dry. Again, avoid cotton socks which are guilty of retaining moisture that can lead to cold feet. Suit your kid up in a neck warmer too. It’s far less of a choking hazard than a scarf. Finally, invest in high-quality, insulated and waterproof boots to keep your child’s feet warm and dry.
