Signs To Watch Out For When Babysitting That May Indicate A Child Is Ill
Your job as a babysitter is bound to have its ups and downs. Hopefully, your babysitting experiences are mostly filled with fun times complete with games, meals and a lot of laughter. However, it’s vital that you’re prepared for worst-case scenarios. Naturally, children get sick from time to time. It’s helpful if you know the signs that may indicate an illness and what to do if you see them.
What are the signs that the kids you’re babysitting might be ill?
They’re unusually tired.
Are you finding your little ones have weirdly low energy levels? Do they not want to participate in activities they usually find fun? Fatigue is a possible indicator that your care recipients might be battling fevers, viruses or stomach aches of some kind. Dehydration or an infection could also be at play.
They’re not eating anything.
Are the children refusing to eat the meals and snacks they regularly enjoy? Maybe sore throats, nausea or stomach aches are the issue.
They look pale or have a rash.
Are the kids looking pale or flush? Are they blue in the lips? The kids may be dehydrated, having respiratory issues, feverish or experiencing poor circulation. Do you see a rash developing? Maybe they’ve come into contact with something they’re allergic to. It’s also possible the kids are overheated.
They won’t stop coughing.
A pretty obvious indication of illness, non-stop coughing or rapid shallow breaths means there could be a respiratory infection.
They’re burning up!
If the body temperature of the kids exceeds 38 degrees Celcius, they have a fever. Do their foreheads and cheeks feel hot to the touch? Are they sweating or even complaining of feeling too cold?
What should you do for the kids?
If you notice any of the abovementioned signs, it’s important to stay calm. Keeping your cool will help you to both better assist the kids you’re babysitting and keep them calm. Encourage the kids to take regular sips of water. Staying hydrated is a key ingredient to overcoming illness. Avoid the urge to feed them, especially if they say they feel like throwing up.
It’s extremely important to remember NOT to give the kids any mediation unless you’ve been given explicit permission by their parents. As well, it’s also important to wash your hands before and after touching the children. This will help you to avoid spreading germs.
When should you call the parents?
Even if the symptoms are mild, it’s always a good idea to put Mom and Dad in the know. Let them know about the mildness or severity of the illnesses being endured by the kids. Allow the parents to decide if it’s necessary to return home immediately. It’s also a good idea to ask the parents for a little advice. They’ll be able to provide you with guidance on what to do if their kids are feeling sick. Remember, you always need their permission to administer any medicine.
When should you call 911?
Certain symptoms indicate emergency situations. If a child is having trouble breathing or is confused or unresponsive, call 911. As well, if you see an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling or problems swallowing; or if the kids have fevers higher than 40 degrees Celsius, dialling 911 is the right call.
